I came here to say that it's working for me now. I made a fresh install of karmic 9.10 and the suspend issue is finally gone: i just have to close the lid, and it works flawlessly. I had several issues on this machine on jaunty 9.04, i couldn't even *boot* with the power cable attached. Apparently the new kernel and the new power manager fixed it.
