The shutdown bug is being discussed here :

manager/+bug/211631?comments=all, but there's no fix as yet.  The
umountcifs.sh script does still work, but as I say, Network Manager
drops the WIFI connection far, far too early in the shutdown process for
it to have any impact.   Seems to be a change from Jaunty to Karmic in
how the shutdown scripts are processed - possibly upstart related, since
even running umountcifs in K01 is quick enough.
