I've managed to make this problem go away by moving the following dirs and
letting them be re-created:

~/.local
~/.gconf
~/.gconfd

They were around from when I upgraded from Jaunty. I'll see if I can't
re-instate them and track down the issue. It's probably quite common for
people upgrading or installing new and re-using their old ~ dir.
