Thank you for responding. That shadow outline has disappeared from my desktop. Thanks a lot. However there is no way I can see to start the advanced desktop Compiz config settings. compizconfig don't give any clue. If anything I think this must be related to missing support for my Nvidia gforce card.

I think that the bug #449272 is similar but requires a different fix. Check also the bug #428783 which was the same problem but with the clock applet. The fix for the clock applet can't fix the invest-applet and the fix for the invest applet can't fix the dictionary applet.
