Thank you for responding. That shadow outline has disappeared from my
desktop. Thanks a lot. However there is no way I  can see to start the
advanced desktop Compiz config settings. compizconfig don't give any
clue. If anything I think this must be related to missing support for my
Nvidia gforce card.

though. I think that you didn't use the ADVANCED CompizConfig Settings Manager.
If you have it installed it must be under System->Preferences->CompizConfig 
Settings Manager.Open the software center and write compizconfig (one word) and 
install the ADVANVCED ccsm.

Gabe Gorelick: Thanks for noticing a possible duplicate. I think that the bug 
#449272 is similar but requires a different fix. Check also the bug #428783 
which was the same problem but with the clock applet. The fix for the clock 
applet can't fix the invest-applet and the fix for the invest applet can't fix 
the dictionary applet. You can find a conversation with the same subject 
(concerning when we should file a separate bug report) between the last 
comments of the bug #428783 .
