I was able to overcome this problem by selecting "Show only subscribed
folders" in [Account Editor]->[Receiving Options] and by selecting
"Override server-supplied folder namespace" in the same tab, with the
namespace "" (two double quotes).

It's possible that the default behaviour should not be to scan gigs of
non-mail-related directories in ~/, but that's another story...
