OK, I've just committed a fix that allows IDs to be handled correctly as long as they don't go beyond G_MAXINT32 when the system supports it, which means on Ubuntu you can go up to 2,147,483,647. I guess that's enough for most people, but I'll see if we can guarantee we support the full range for 32-bit IDs in a later release.
