I have a similar problem:[lucid]

My GDM is in its default state.(i have not changed it like the above user had
done)
I can log in with a local account (one of the two that is suggests), but when
I click "other" and log in with
an ActiveDirectory username, ( DOMAIN\first.last),
I do not get prompted for a password.
The screen may go black then bring up the defaul login screen again, with
2 local accounts as suggestions for usernames.

I can log into the machine via ssh from another machine using the same
DOMAIN\first.last account proving that the Likewise-Open software is
installed and running correctly.

I do have this in /var/log/auth.log
Dec 29 12:49:18 bee15 gdm-session-worker[2718]: pam_unix(gdm:auth):
conversation failed
Dec 29 12:49:18 bee15 gdm-session-worker[2718]: pam_unix(gdm:auth): auth could
not identify password for [DOMAIN\first.last]
