Public bug reported:

The mpeg4 videos are DVD rips made with Handbrake. Most of the video
files play without issue. However, I've found a few that either result
in a blank display or diagonal multi-colored lines.

The same settings and encoding profile are used for all the video files.
The only difference between those that play properly and the ones
exhibiting this problem is the cropping of the original source to remove
black borders.

If the video output plugin in gstreamer-properties is changed from
"Autodetect" to "X Window System (No Xv)" then the problematic files
play. However, with this change made all video playback becomes
noticeably choppy. Likewise if the output is changed to "X Window
System (X11/XShm/Xv)" the playback is no longer choppy for the videos
that originally played fine but these problematic videos once again
result in either a black screen or multi-colored lines.

Additionally, other players such as vlc and mplayer are able to play all
of the video files without issue and without being noticeably choppy.
