I'm having the same problem. If I use the test option in 'gstreamer-
properties' I also am able to hear the test beep.

I thought this seemed a little odd as well. When I attempt to play the
file initially by either clicking on it, or through a terminal, I hear
no sound and see the error:

"Totem could not play 'file:///home/matthew/Custom Sounds/spam.wav'
Internal data stream error."

Now, at this point if I leave Totem open and just try to play the file
again I experience a different problem nearly every time I try and
replay the file. I either get a brief sound followed by the "Internal
data stream error.", no sound at all and just the internal data error,
or the sound might play with no error. When the file actually plays, it
does not however play in its entirety. I hear most of it, but it cuts
out near the end. I'm assuming the reason I hear 'most of it' is that I
am using a 3 second sound clip. But of course the strangest thing is the
fact that the result is not consistent.

Also, I might add that this only seems to be a problem with wav files,
at least for me, whereas mp3's and ogg's play just fine.
