The work-around is to mount at boot time, i.e. add suitable lines to the
end of /etc/fstab such as:

/dev/sdc1    /media/FreeAgent   ntfs    defaults     0        2
/dev/sdb1    /media/t1backup ext4  defaults          0        2

Then both problem disks are accessible even when working over a remote
vnc connection.
