I ran rhythmbox --debug &> rhythmbox-debug.txt as suggested and let the
machine sit for a minute or so after it stopped playing radio before
attempting to interact with it. The log file is quite long and gives the
impression that it was playing radio right up to the point where I
killed the application. However no sound came out for more than a minute
before I stopped it.

NB, I chose the Quit command off the menu because it normally lets you
do one thing before becoming completely non-responsive. After about ten
seconds of non-responsive I then hit the X in the title bar and Gnome
gave me one of the screens with a choice between waiting or killing the
program. I chose the latter.
