@Karl, can you please try to install the development release of empathy from the ppa by doing sudo add-apt-reporsitory ppa:telepathy/ppa ;sudo apt-get update ;sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and reboot and try to connect and see if the problem still exist. Thanks
