In the meantime, I have discovered a workaround to this issue. I was experimenting with gnome-shell, and I set it as my default WM via the GConf key /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager. After getting tired of Gnome-shell, I wanted to re-enable compiz, and discovered, to my delight, that setting this key to "compiz" starts compiz up at login time.
