My laptop's screen resolution is 1024x600, and it's graphics hardware is Intel 945. Compiz is enabled with cube rotate turned on and four virtual desktops. When attaching an external monitor with 1280x720 res the display applet decides to lay out the screens side by side. Given the total width is greater than 2048 (the max texture size of the intel chipset) compiz gets turned off. Choosing a screen layout of above/below means I can re- enable compiz but the number of virtual desktops has been reset to two and cube rotate has been disabled. If the monitor is detatched and then re-attached the screen layout is again reset to side by side, the cube rotate has been disabled and the number of virtual desktops is reset to two again. The bug is that the screen orientation and Compiz settings are not persisted when I would expect them to be.
