Ok. I installed the gedit-dev package and performed the steps to get a backtrace. I don't know if this helps much - all of the activity was in a plugin - the sidepanel plugin - which I guess isn't included in the -dev package, and then everything else was in the gtk packages. Let me know if you want me to install the gtk-dev stuff and rerun the backtrace.
