Switched to runlevel 3. Logged in. Switched to root. Ran "pm-suspend". Laptop promptly shuts down.
Now for the weirdness. Press the latch key, laptop starts. (Different than VT7, eh?) The problem still is there. Blank screen. No amount of keys pressed could coax it. Re-booted.
