If you don't change your theme much, I recommend following the instructions I posted way back in comment 58 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/metacity/+bug/160311/comments/58). It's clunky and manual, but it works and results in a usable theme regardless of which one you choose.
