@Tom, did you tried installing kdm (the KDE desktop manager)? That always worked for me, anyway it seems that you are having trouble also with authentication. Have you tried login in with single user mode? That automatically logs you in as root if I am correct, so you can at least avoid the first step of the problem. You just have to choose an appropriate boot option.
