I'd like to add that I have had this issue with gnome on karmic UNR 32bit and I am having it with karmic kubuntu 64bit. So perhaps this has nothing to do with gnome-screensaver but something at a lower level? As previous posters, I've been unable to figure out a pattern, this happens "sometimes". I am pretty concerned with this issue.
