Yes I miss. But I think that wasn't just a decision of rhythmbox, but
rather of gnome. Almost all current applications use similar interface
so it'd be hard to fix that.

IMHO the button should be placed in the top of menu like in transmission.
Why:
Solves current problem
Menu is more usable. Most people don't use 'Play' 'Prev' 'Next' buttons since 
these are accessible from the main window also and there are keyboard shortcuts.
