Hi Sebastien, Sorry for the delayed response. After you uncofirmed the bug on your system, I did some further testing on my system. It seems my initial description was not completely accurate.
It turns out that if you wait long enough (~80 seconds) the username text field eventually appears. This only happens the first time I reboot the machine, and it happens regardless of what GDM version I am using. Please feel free to close this bug report. When time permits, I will try to run gdm using gdb to try to get to the bottom of this issue. I suspect it might be related to the number of users in my system (>1000) and the fact that they all have afs home folders.
