from your bug report you seem to not use the currently shipped version of
gthumb (2.10.11). 2.11.x had some problems and Ubuntu therefore decided to not
ship it with Lucid. Could you do an upgrade (this will actually *downgrade*
your gthumb version to the one in Karmic) and report whether the problem
persists?
