I agree with you that Alt+click is just a workaround, not a solution, but at least for me it's a really effective workaround. I almost never bother with window borders or grippies, because I got so used to Alt+Clicking anywhere in the window to move or resize. I really miss that feature when I have to deal with MS Windows. Some kind of tip or video showing these kinds of features would be great @The Fiddler, I am indeed on a laptop, and I too, find it very difficult to press alt + both touchpad buttons + swipe finger on pad. But clicking just one button (left button to move window, for example) is much easier, and that's what I use all the time. I've posted a patch in compiz bug #207065 to make windows resizeable with just alt+right click, which makes this feature much more accesible in laptops.
