I created a newuser as requested. Trying to play the movie produced the same results, it did not play and no message as to why.
I also tried running totem from the command line, no additional messages seen. I also tried running totem in dedug mode, no messages that appeared seemed to relate to the issue: $ totem --debug (totem:3534): Totem-DEBUG: Received SaveYourself(SmSaveLocal, !Shutdown, SmInteractStyleNone, !Fast) in state idle (totem:3534): Totem-DEBUG: Setting initial properties (totem:3534): Totem-DEBUG: Sending SaveYourselfDone(True) for initial SaveYourself (totem:3534): Totem-DEBUG: Received SaveComplete message in state save-yourself-done (totem:3534): Totem-DEBUG: Init of Python module (totem:3534): Totem-DEBUG: Registering Python plugin instance: BBCViewer+TotemPythonPlugin (totem:3534): Totem-DEBUG: Creating object of type BBCViewer+TotemPythonPlugin (totem:3534): Totem-DEBUG: Creating Python plugin instance (totem:3534): Totem-DEBUG: Finalizing Python plugin instance After your comment that "that's more like a codecs issue and not a totem bug" I remembered that I had previously installed the package (via synaptic): ubuntu-restricted-extras I removed this package (via synaptic). I still got the same response when trying to load the mp4 file, it did not play and no response at all as to why. Even after a reboot. The file I am trying to play does appear in the "Supported files" list when I was selecting it from within totem, both with and without the "ubuntu-restricted-extras" packages installed. -- Totem Movie Player cannot Play MP4 Files - It Should at least tell the user this https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/614303 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to totem in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
