I'm sorry, but that's an incredibly unhelpful and arrogant attitude.

Users shouldn't be bothered with technical details. It should just work.
If they configure Firefox as their default browser, it should become
their default browser. It should not become the default browser only for
some of their programs.

And of course alternatives are a user setting! Are you really suggesting
that if some program installs itself with a higher priority so that a
user's favourite program is no longer started, they should just shut up
and take it? Of course not. They should be able to configure it.
