I also had a similar problem after changing my motherboard: my USB wifi dongle
was disconnected after an error message related to rhythmbox (in dmesg: "usb
2-1.1: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd rhythmbox rqt 128 rq 6 len 255 ret
-71"). I was able to reconnect by unplugging / replugging it. Disabling the MTP
plugin was a permanent solution.
The wifi dongle was working flawlessly with the older MB, with the same Lucid
config (I only had to change the X driver, I suppose udev dealt with the
balance). I don't use MTP, so I don't know if it was working then.
