I have an Asus X71Sl laptop, and while on AC power performance is good,
while on battery, music and video playback skip, while reading files
from the HDD (or from the optical unit). Weirdly enough, media from the
net (e.g. Youtube) does not seem to be affected, or at least not in the
same amount.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04, i have Compiz enabled (if that's relevant), I
use Exaile for my audio files and I've tried watching video files with
both Gnome-Mplayer and VLC.

The files are generally lossy formats, .mp3s, .oggs, .avis.
