If this can help, I can say you in addition that I have tried the new Google plugin for video chat within Gmail, and this one function very well: good image quality, good audio, and especially perfect synchronization. Important to say is that I have used the Google video chat with the same person of the Empathy test above. I mean: same Ubuntu 10.04 OS, same PC, same adsl internet connection, same location for both, and obviously same chat protocol. So I think that we can exclude "external" factors that can influence audio and video synchronization in Empathy.
