I'm using Ubuntu 6.10 (so edgy) and I have updated it every day. My chipset is an Intel HDA (ICH7 Family). More details at line 399 of lshal.txt. I've got no master channel on it, but headphone one.
I've got the same problem with an Intel AC'97 82801DB-ICH4 chipset running on dapper.
