The version I'm suggesting you to use is actually much more stable than the one 
you're currently using... ;-) You can install it without updating any other 
packages by getting it from
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/system-tools-backends_2.9.4-0ubuntu1.1_i386.deb
 (for 32bits)
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/system-tools-backends_2.9.4-0ubuntu1.1_amd64.deb
 (for 64bits)

If you don't want to test this, we can try debugging the version you have -

(BTW, lucid-proposed is not testing the next release at all: it's just getting 
stable updates before they have been re-tested in Lucid, but they are always 
tested by users from more recent releases like Maverick currently, and they 
only include small bugfixes.)
