I would like to add my vote as well to this issue.

I often use split-panel mode to transfer files and compare directories.
It is quick, easy, and built-in.

I do not see what the problem is with making this an option so that
those who wish for the split-panel view to be the default behavior can
do so.  It does not affect the functionality of the tool (it already
does so), and should be straight forward enough to implement.

I am quite surprised at the upstream's decision and dismissal of what is
a useful feature.
