Hmmm... again, did the --express mode support calendaring? I was unable to find it, and without it, I am more prone to switch back to mutt or pine :-).
Nevertheless, I think this is all a bit overstretched. It would be just - add a scrollbar to the only dialog in all the interface that do not have it - see why simply not visualizing the (mail, calendar, addressbook...) icons solves the resize problem and evolution will work perfectly in whichever resolution.
