This may explain it in some way: it turned out that ubuntu-desktop was uninstalled and uninstallable because several Ubuntu-specific packages required python << 2.7, and 2.7 was all I had. I'm in the process of resolving that; it looks like apt-get dist-upgrade just wasn't bold enough.
