I can confirm this behaviour on Edgy. It happens on an upgraded install
on a PC and on a clean install on a mac.

If the display is never allowed to sleep then the screensaver starts up
exactly as you'd expect (on timeout and on ctrl-alt-l). Once the screen
has been allowed to sleep the screensaver no longer activates.

The bizarre thing is that _sometimes_ the screensaver will work after a
screen sleep, but not often!

The only way t restore normal behaviour is a reboot. Logout or restart X
don't affect it.
