Gnome Power Manager is the package responsible for listening to the
power menu and poking DeviceKit Power which in turn calls pm-suspend.

Something in that chain is going wrong, but it's definitely not pm-
utils.

Could you kill the gnome-power-manager process, and start it in a
terminal with "gnome-power-manager --verbose", then close the lid and
poke the suspend option in the power menu, then post the output here?
