I have been advised in #ubuntu-desktop that in 11.10 the behaviour has
been changed...

In 11.10 Empathy does not need to be running at login, instead it brings
you online without running empathy. If someone IMs you, and you click on
the indicator *then* it runs empathy.

I am very happy with this solution.  My issue was that the status
indicators did not work, so that effectively stuff was broken by
default.  Unfortunately this will not be fixed until 11.10, but not too
long to wait.

In the meantime anyone having this problem can just add /usr/bin/empathy
to the Start-up Applications in Settings.
