Since libtotem0-dbgsym didn't work I've installed totem-dbg, but still no success with gdb, which says 'No symbol table info available'. Now when Totem is greyed out, spinning in a loop, at least gdb accepts typing (but still no ctrl+c) and Unity doesn't crash.
