I think the behaviour for this has changed in Ubuntu 10.10, so that
volume up pushes the volume up from 0 instead. On the other hand, it
sounds like your mute button isn't registering a keypress when the
volume is muted, hence not allowing you to unmute it.

Could you run xev in a terminal, and in the window that appears, press
Mute twice in succession, then post the output here.

Either way, the volume that is being changed is the global machine
volume, rather than Banshee's volume (Banshee has nothing to do with the
volume keys), so I'm changing the package to gnome-settings-daemon
temporarily (I believe that's what handles the volume keys)
