Things are indeed significantly improved in beta5. I attach a screenshot of the current status.
As you can see in the screenshot, the bottom contact name now appears ok (the name is aligned to the right, as it should be, and is in legible Hebrew). However, the contact _group_ is still in gibberish, as before. I thought that this might be an issue of my pre-existing contact group preferences, so I deleted blist.xml in .gaim. But when gaim beta5 created the new blist.xml, the same problem occurred.
