I don't think installing Telepathy is the way to solve the problem.

This bug has been detected and reported in LTS version, and since it has
been confirmed by many users (and seems to be a possible source for the
bug), it should be fixed in LTS version.

I've used Pidgin today and it still works properly so, as Stuart
comments, can be an useful workaround while the bug is beeing fixed.
