I got the same problem after a clean install of 11.10 and then importing Evolution's settings. Right-clicking and choosing properties on the Gmail contacts account I deleted the '@gmail.com' part of my user name and clicked apply. Upon restarting Evolution I was prompted for my password and now it works.
