Thanks for your response! I trust the "non-free" codecs packages have been installed? In case you didn't know, due to copyright and patent reasons, Ubuntu can't ship with any non-open multimedia codecs (software you need to play media files). As such, you need extra packaged to be able to playback patented formats like MP3. In this case, I suggest Automatix ( http://www.getautomatix.com/ ) to install the necessary decoders and a whole lot more.
In case you already have the codecs installed (doesn't have to be through Automatix; it can be done manually), please let everyone know, so that we can think of some other way to help you.
