I'm not exactly sure. I can't drag icons from the unity menu to the desktop. But if i right click on the desktop i have the options to Create New Document or Create New Folder. I can create a link to a file in my home folder and can drag that to my desktop if that help answer your question. I tried that command and got nothing back. I tried it a couple times, but got nothing back each time. Even sudo did not help.
