There is a possibility that the pulseaudio daemon is either the direct
or indirect cause of applications locking up. It was observed that the
pulseaudio daemon failed to start during the Ubuntu boot up. The
package was subsequently removed and the default Ubuntu desktop was
used. In this configuration Thunderbird, Firefox and other applications
worked as expected. Before the windows of these application eventually
darken and the application locked up.
