I'll argue that users shouldn't have to edit a cross-application hidden text file to use what appears as a straightforward setting in Rhythmbox Preferences. Either the Library Location preference should be authoritative and completely override the default location, or Rhythmbox Preferences should explain that XDG_MUSIC_DIR will always be scanned and that the user has no control over this.
