I am also experiencing exactly this issue, but with a jabber.org server run by my ISP. Please have a responsible developer point to the exact XMPP XEP standard saying that clients don't do keepalive.
>From the linked Gnome bug: "Danielle Madeley [empathy developer] 2010-02-22 02:18:04 UTC The Telepathy API exposes no responsibility for keep-alive, so this is not an Empathy bug." <<--in the politest way possible, this should be handled differently. I would think this should have been forwarded to the Telepathy API maintainer, and not just summarily closed. Closing the bug doesn't fix the problem, which is the need for keepalive on the client side (see explanation below). Otherwise, the issue will keep coming up. Gtalk expects to disconnect clients after ~300 seconds if no keepalive is sent. Jabber/XMPP server implementation leaves a lot open to server maintainers, not all of which can be addressed from the user side. Failing to understand that keepalive is expected to be a client side option by XMPP server implementors is not an excuse for closing a bug, except maybe forwarding it as a feature request. Clients have no control over whether Google or any other XMPP provider will offer keepalive on their side. Please forward back to Gnome, preferably to someone else who will provide better feedback. If the feedback continues to be "we're going to ignore it", then maybe Ubuntu should look to a different chat client provider. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/479784 Title: Empathy keeps disconnecting with Network Error using Jabber To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/empathy/+bug/479784/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
