Found what causes this. It only seems to happen if I have pidgin open and signed into facebook on my other computer. I don't know why empathy can't handle signing into facebook while pidgin is connected to it, I've never had this problem with pidgin or any other in client not being able to sign in when its signed in on another computer... I switched to trillian on that computer and empathy seems to like that better and I haven't seen the problem so far.
