Public bug reported: When launching the appearance dialog, it is unresponsive and quickly stalls, the window greys out and it requires a kill or 'force quit'.
This appears to be specific to Intel graphics hardware (and possibly other brands) as another Ubuntu user I know who is using the proprietary ATI drivers is not experiencing the problem.
