As expected, also from your comments, it was a problem on my computer. There were a number of GIMP files in my /usr/local folder. I really cannot remember ever having compiled GIMP myself, so I have not clue how that ended up there, but also not why they were not removed with the new Ubuntu install. But in any case, removing them solved the problem. Many thanks for your help and sorry for the troubles.
