Hello. Thanks for the quick reply. Are you the 'gnome' behind Gnome? My
responses between yours.....

I figured something like that - but for the average user of Ubuntu,
there is NO way to know this....

Surprising....both that is can be removed and that it always [100% of
the time] will temporarily solve the problem for the next session only!

I'll take a look in synaptic...again, such renamings are not known to
the average user and create confusion. You who work with and build the
programs know these things - but most do not - and have need to know [or
not have names changed]. I don't understand why there are now two
flavors of 'fallback'.

Yes, many times. The two both will not work. Other desktops seem to work
- I just don't like them and it is fallback that has my years of
personalization [most, not all of it, carried over from 12.04-14.04

Likely - and it is frustrating that while the system prompts for hitting
the upgrade button [as if all will go well], Linux geeks always advise a
'clean install'. I'd do a clean install if someone would tell me [or
point to a url instructing how to QUICKLY [no more than a day's work]
get back what I had before in: programs, basic look, and functionality.
I have a package list, but once before [when upgrading into 12.04] tried
to run that on a clean install, all I got was a */mess/*....no doubt
because many of the packages are not supported by the new distribution
and/or dependencies are not met or different, etc. I understand that
theoretically, but not how to run it so that this doesn't cause
problems. This upgrade otherwise seems to have gone OK [had to reinstall
grub and fight with new AMD drivers - taking several days for me....but
then I thought it was good to go and liked the new features....but...the
problem is now persistent and I'm using 12.04 most of the time again.

I believe I have 3.10 - I have not tried to install 3.14. I thought 3.10
was the basic one in 14.04 but I could be wrong. Again, such things are
not explained nor told to the average user and endless research on the
internet I do only as needed [which is often]. A weekly newsletter of
changes, common problems etc. might be a good idea from the geeks and
developers to the average user.

newer than what? What should I..and how can I 'downgrade' if too high now?

I can't do ANYTHNG - no keyboard or mouse clicks do anything...though
the mouse cursor moves. The folders and icons on the desktop are there -
but NO panels [which have my launchers]. I can't get a terminal...so
must push the button on the computer to turn off and back on....annoying
and likely bad for the system too.

Hmmm.....I'm in 12.04 now and will send that in a few hours. sorry to
not have noticed this request before starting. Don't worry, I won't ask
why. ;-) Thanks again! gnome log coming soon. Just made a note..but must
get some work done first. Peter
